New Sab The Artist EP review

Sab is an interesting beast in that he refuses to lie complacently in a predefined genre. He is primarily a soul-flavored hip hop artist, but to simply pigeonhole him as such is to offend the versatility of his musicality. He infuses a pop/rock sensibility akin to Outkast and A Tribe Called Quest, which entices the listener to involuntarily bob his/her head while listening.
Sab can also actually sing when the song calls for it - that means no Auto-Tone for the kids playing the home game. Although Sab the Artist principally consists of a guy, a drum loop, and some samples, Sab is so capable in song construction that you'd almost swear that a full band was involved.
The lead track, "Lookin At Girls" takes the listener right back to the late 1980s / early 1990s when the Fresh Prince and Kid ‘n Play were in their heyday. The song playfully emulates their good-natured rhymes. However, it is not a throwback album. The spirit of the music is rooted in the old school, but the songwriting, execution and lyrical flow are poignantly of this era.
Something should also be said for Sab's aversion to brutal and harsh deliveries, which observably aligns him with Common, Talib Kweli, and Q-Tip. His rap M.O. is clearly witty romantic storytelling that is grounded in reality.
Listening to Sab the Artist is how one might expect Ice Cube to sound after you see one of his family-friendly films. It is very rare in this day and age to come across a rap album that steers clear of swearing and overtly suggestive lyrics.
Take it for what you will, but Sab is one of the very few rap artists that is generally safe for children to listen to. And I don't know if this damages his street credibility, but it does open the genre to a larger generational demographic - and not every kid can be weaned on the Wu-Tang Clan and NWA. Sab the Artist is honestly a breath of fresh air in an unfortunately formulaic environment.

Under The Bridge

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Wow! Even John Mayer makes mistakes.

One thing all humans are good for is a mistake. John Mayer just made a huge one and I'm not shocked. It's very hard to walk around on this planet with that perfect good guy image and go to your grave unscathed. I don't think John Mayer is racist and I'd bet he probably is a pretty good guy, but to me he's still just a guy. He's one of the most talented artist of our time so that put's him in a different box and that's why his mistake will be frowned upon to higher degrees.

When your on John Mayer status you can't get drunk and make remarks like he did. The racial remarks aside, you can't even say dick and cock in an interview when your on John Mayer status. John made a human mistake. He will learn and he will grow from this as a person.

And I will say, his remarks were very offensive and he's in for a heap of trouble behind it. And that trouble is mostly with himself. Damn that must of been some good scotch.

John Mayer will receive no judgement from me. He makes good music and that's all I ever needed from him.

Also, he must have a terrible sense of humor. This is why only comedians should make jokes.

"See You Thru My Shades"

I first outlined this track in a hotel room on the "Freshly Dipped" tour with Hieroglyphics in 2008. I put an unmixed version up on myspace and three days later I performed it in New York city by fan request. The song remained in my song list on the tour until the very end. It's produced by my man A-Plus (Souls of Mischief) who in my modest opinion is one of Hip Hops most profound producers.

The song is an ode to my sunglass collection, I like wearing my shades more at night than I do in the day. I don't mind sunlight in my face but I can't stand strobe lights. So a tune is born.

Enjoy if you will. Peace and love eternal.

"Forever and Ever"

<a href="http://sabmusic.bandcamp.com/track/forever-and-ever">Forever and Ever by SAB</a>
This song I titled "Forever and Ever" because I believe forever is more of a place than it is a time. We use the word forever when we deal with situations that make us emotional. For instance, when we are in love we want to be in that place forever. When we are feeling great we want to remain in that place forever, and hence. So forever is the place where we feel all of our good feelings. C'mon baby, let's go to Forever.

My man LMS produced the track as well as "Careful". I think we make ok music together :) I hope everyone enjoys. There's a leeaaak!

I thought Brett Favre would brake the curse.

In the world of sports the word "cursed" is used to describe a certain team's misfortunes and inability to win a championship over very long periods of time. Now wether you believe in curses or not doesn't matter, that's the way the sports world is. Simply because every franchise/team will have their day of glory.... right? I mean, in the NFL even the LA/St.Louis Rams won a championship within this decade, and now look where they are. At the bottom of the league where we expect them to be. That's why you have to look at why the word "cursed" is used in sports so much and with such belief.

"Cursed" is not used because a team merely loses games. No, it's used because of the WAY a team loses games. The Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, LA Clippers (because of their number one draft picks). The term is put on franchises that statistically actually should win championships and those that have been in the position to win titles but to everyone's disbelief come up short, every time. Now to my point.

The Minnesota Vikings are the most "cursed" team in sports, period. I would say the Cubs but they have won World Series, even if it's been forever. The Vikings have been to four Superbowls and have not come away with one victory. I wasn't around back in those days but from what I hear they should have had a dynasty. And the only image implanted in mind from that era is Jim Marshall recovering a fumble and returning it in to the opposite end zone with his arms raised in celebration.

Now fast forward to the Vikes of the 90's. The Randy Moss/Dennis Green era. They should have won a Superbowl but they go up against an inferior NY Giants team in the NFC championship and lay an egg, losing 41-0. And then there's the NFC championship loss to the Atlanta Falcons at home in the Metrodome. We all remember the missed field goal by Gary Anderson who set an NFL record by converting every field goal in the regular season, 35 to be exact. With about two minutes left in the fourth quarter with the Vikes leading 27-20 he missed a 38 yard attempt. That would have put the game away but of course the Falcons march down and score sending the game into over time and eventually winning the game by a field goal. The Vikings were 15-1 that season.

Ok, that's in the past. I have to admit when the Vikings acquired the legend Brett Favre last off season I honestly thought the curse was broken. He has a Superbowl ring, he's definitely not cursed. I mean, Curt Shilling broke the Red Sox curse. So number 4 would brake the Vikes. As the season went on I was sure the curse was broke, especially after that awesome win over the 49er's with that time expiring hail mary touch down throw by none other than Brett Favre. Yes!!

Fast forward to the playoffs. They crush Dallas, no surprise. They were supposed to, the Vikes were a much better team than Dallas. So off to battle the New Orleans Saints which I must say have a damn good team. Any how the Vikes were still better, but they lost. After watching that game I'm convinced the curse is apparent. Everyone played great, aside from special teams but the defense made up for that, hats off to the defense. What comes to mind most during that game is that it seemed like the football did not want to be touched by a Minnesota Vikings player. I've never seen anything like it in an NFL game of that magnitude. It seemed as though every one who touched the football who was a Viking became Bill Buckner. I feel bad for the team, they came prepared and played their hearts out. So I'm blaming that loss on the "curse".

I've said for awhile now maybe a change of uniforms can change the misfortunes for the Vikes. Cause the purple is obviously not doing it. I don't know. Any ideas anybody?

The auto repair industry needs reform!

Every American definitely has one thing in common. We all have been screwed over by an auto repair shop or mechanic. Everyone's been asked, "do you know a good mechanic?". And unless that mechanic is a close relative or friend, then you probably don't. It sucks to say the least. We are dependent upon our vehicles to get to work, school, grocery market etc. Some of our lively hoods are resting on our ability to transport to and fro and our vehicles are left in the hands of these vultures. I don't exaggerate when I say 9 out of 10 mechanics are crooks and cheapskates looking for and most times probably creating issues on our automobiles that need to be repaired so they can get paid.

How did this industry get so unguarded? Mechanics and repair shops are screwing Americans over at will and there's nothing we can do about it. Taking are vehicles in for repairs and tune ups always turns out to be one big stress more times than not. I mean the mentality of Americans is this, "I need a mechanic I can trust". Why? That's because we all know what we are dealing with. Snakes, and they've become so comfortable robbing people their not even hiding in the grass anymore.

So, if anything should be government regulated it's the auto repair industry. This has a direct effect on the lives of everyday average Americans in a big way. How long are we going to let these crooks keep openly stealing from us?

Reform and regulate the auto repair industry for the sake of all Americans.

Careful

Sun Beam

<a href="http://sabmusic.bandcamp.com/track/sun-beam">Sun Beam by SAB</a>
This song Sun Beam is a gem. Nima Fadavi laced the production and my beautiful and talented sister Sandra D. assisted me on the hook. We had a lot of fun creating this song.
She illuminates everything around her, including me which is what gave me the idea for the concept Sun Beam. Hope you enjoy.

Where is American tennis?

I'm just...

Watching the Australian Open and working on completing as much music as I can. I wonder what happened to American men's tennis? When I first began watching Pete Sampras was at the end of his career along with Andre Agassi. I watched the match where Pete defeated Andre to win the US Open title that year. That turned out to be Pete's last match. Afterwards Andy Roddick looked promising along with James Blake. Roddick won one US Open title and that's the end of men's American tennis. What? I mean I know we are watching the greatest player of all time in my opinion in Roger Federer but come on, no American male outside of Roddick is a consistent top 5 player. I hope some where out there some young kid is training his butt off with the talent and ambition to bring men's American tennis back to glory. Otherwise tennis is great and I love watching no matter who's playing. I hope Roger gets to 20 titles, that would be great to see in our life time.

Tiger Woods a sex addict?

A couple of months ago I was surprised just like the rest of the world when Tiger's perfect bubble popped and the sex scandal was world wide news. Although I was surprised it wasn't the fact he was cheating that surprised me, it was how blatant and irresponsible he was about it. I mean this guy risked everything he had on average girls at best. Cocktail servers and VIP host? Leaving voice mails (evidence) on girls phones signing off as "Tiger"? I can't help but ask, "What was he thinking?" I'm sure we all would like to know.

Anyhow it's got me thinking, maybe he is a sex addict. I never really believed in the term before now but if Tiger could risk everything he has on regular sex romps with girls who are nothing to brag about bagging, then maybe he is a sex addict. My common sense is telling me you'd have to be a sex addict to throw what he had away on.... that. And I'm not judging. I'm just wondering. I've never walked in those shoes and not many men have nor ever will, so I don't know what it's like. I do know that all men love attention from women and most men love sex. And many men of less public stature have sacrificed more than they should have on a fling with the best available girl.

Yes of course, but I don't think any man has given up what Tiger has for a piece of ass in our modern era. Not Bill Clinton. Not Steve Phillips. No one, because no one was Tiger Woods. Maybe he wasn't aware of just who he was and how many people were just dying to take that away from him. Well now he does know if he didn't.

Get help Tiger. I hope you find yourself and peace. I wish you the best. Every man makes mistakes. You just happened to be Tiger Woods.
